Resetting Locked User Accounts Follow

Overview

If a user tries logging on with the wrong password too many times, Linux will lock their account.  These directions show how to release the lock on the user account.

Procedure

  1. Login as root
  2. Type faillog –a to view all failed logon accounts.
    • This listing will display all locked user accounts and how many failed tries were made. Non-locked accounts will also display if there are any failed attempts as well.
  3. To release a single account, type faillog –r <user_name>
  4. To release all accounts, type faillog -r
